2011 Chrysler 300





Chrysler's relatively small lineup just got considerably better with the latest 300 sedan thanks to vast improvements across the board, making the brand's halo vehicle a competitive luxury sedan.
The all-new Chrysler 300 arrives with a sticker price of just $27,995, including $825 in destination, despite the fact that the base 300 now comes with a significantly more powerful 292 horsepower 3.6-liter V6, improved cloth seats and 17-inch wheels.
Buyers wanting a little more luxury can step up the the Limited trim level, which starts at $31,995. The Limited adds leather, heated seats, Uconnect voice command and 18-inch wheels.
While we wait for the fire-breathing SRT8 model, the 300C will stand as the line's top offering, commanding a price of $38,995. The 300C adds a 5.7-liter V8, heated steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, power folding mirrors and LED interior lighting. An all-wheel drive version of the 300C is also available for $41,145.
The 5.7-liter-equipped 300 is expected to hit 0-60 in 5.4 seconds.
Chrysler goes high-tech
A sophisticated dashboard-mounted UConnect Touch infotainment system is set to take on Ford’s MyTouch by offering numerous convenience and connectivity features. Chrysler says that the 8.4-inch screen - just over an inch smaller than an Apple iPad - is the largest standard screen in the segment.
Other interior upgrades include new blue back lighting for the gauges, more contoured seats and, Chrysler says, vastly improved interior materials.
Like its Dodge Charger platform mate, the new 300 features a very thorough facelift, leaving elements of the current design somewhat intact. The interior is clearly vastly improved, addressing what was often the biggest complaint with the previous generation of the vehicle.
A new front end looks like it will tone down the Bentley influences in favor of something a bit more chiseled and modern, and clearly has familial ties with its little brother Chrysler 200 sedan.
The side sills have been reworked, and there are visible changes to the side window profile. The small triangle at the rear-side window is gone, resulting in an enlarged glass area, but a thin pillar appears to reduce the size of the roll-down portion of the side glass.
The rear-end gets new LED tail-lights, a reshaped trunk lid, and a new rear bumper with integrated exhaust tips which are more a part of the rear styling.
Underpinning the new 300 will be Chrysler’s new LY architecture — essentially a heavy rework of the outgoing LX chassis. However, some components have been carried over. Fiat is said be planning future cars on the LY platform as well.
In order to improve fuel economy, Chrysler employed a combination of improved aerodynamics, axle ratios and drivetrains for the latest 300. At the heart of the improvements is Chrysler's all-new Pentastar V6 engines.
The new Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 replaces both V6s that were offered in the LX cars, improving both fuel economy and performance.
Although an eight-speed automatic transmission is planned for the new LY cars, the first year of the new 300 will have to make due with a five-speed unit.
All-wheel drive also returns for the newest model, with the 300 offering a class-exclusive transfer case that allows the front axle to disconnect from the drivetrain when AWD is not needed. Chrysler says the feature can improve fuel economy by up to 5 percent.

2012-Toyota-Yaris- 11

 

Introduction

The Corolla-based 2010 Toyota Matrix hatchback reminds us that the folks at Toyota can still make a darned good small car when they put their minds to it. We've been underwhelmed by the latest Corolla, to put it mildly, but its Matrix cousin is a thoroughly competent effort. It's certainly no hot rod, but we're pretty sure most compact hatchback or wagon buyers care more about practicality than performance. And for them, the 2010 Matrix is one of the most compelling choices in this segment.
In many ways, the Matrix is like Corolla version 2.0. Its sheet metal is far more stylish, its 3 extra inches of height boost passenger space, and its convenient hatchback/wagon design means you can haul a lot of stuff. This cargo-carrying capacity is one of the Matrix's biggest draws -- with 61.5 cubic feet of space, this modestly sized Toyota can haul nearly as much as some compact SUVs. Yet its fuel economy with the base 1.8-liter engine is still quite good at 28 mpg combined. The Matrix costs a grand or two more than the Corolla, but its verve and versatility make it well worth the extra coin.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2010 Toyota Matrix is a compact hatchback available in three trim levels: base, S and XRS. All-wheel drive is optional on the midrange S. The base car features 16-inch steel wheels, power mirrors, air-conditioning, a CD stereo with an auxiliary audio jack, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a fold-flat front passenger seat. Cruise control, keyless entry and power windows and locks are optional on this version of the Matrix but standard on the S, which also adds a rear window wiper, underbody spoilers, an upgraded stereo and a 115-volt utility outlet. The all-wheel-drive version of the S loses the spoilers, but it gains foglights and an independent rear suspension. The top-of-the-line Matrix XRS tacks on 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, sport-tuned suspension and steering, upgraded seat fabric and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Powertrains and Performance

On the base front-wheel-drive Toyota Matrix, you'll find a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a four-speed automatic is optional. Matrix S and XRS models upgrade to a 2.4-liter engine that makes 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, as well as an optional five-speed automatic alongside the standard five-speed manual. The AWD S comes only with the four-speed automatic.

Safety

The 2010 Toyota Matrix comes standard with stability control and antilock disc brakes, with the S and XRS boasting larger discs all around. Also standard are front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

Interior Design and Special Features

Inside, the Matrix has a significantly edgier ambience than the Corolla. If you think this compact sedan's interior lacks flair, the Matrix is the antidote. A telescoping steering wheel and ample seat-track travel allow drivers of all sizes to get comfortable, and the controls are both intuitive and attractive. In back, the tall, deep bench is inviting for children and adults alike, and it folds completely flat in 60/40 sections.

Driving Impressions

The base Matrix accelerates sluggishly off the line with its 1.8-liter engine, but its admirable fuel economy will redeem it in the eyes of many shoppers. The 2.4-liter engine in the S and XRS is the opposite -- power is ample, but fuel economy is just OK. The ride is smooth and well-insulated. The 2010 Toyota Matrix may not be the sportiest economy hatchback, but its refinement is laudable.
The Toyota Yaris  has now been with us since 2005 and despite its age it’s still regularly in the top three best selling light cars in the country (competing with Hyundai Getz and Mazda2). The next generation Yaris is due in 2012 but given that it’s sold in other markets as a Toyota Vitz, pictures of the new model have emerged from a brochure printed in Asia.
Toyota has just confirmed the launch its all-new Vitz subcompact car for the Japanese market, which will be also known as the Yaris for the U.S. and European markets later in the future. The 2012 Toyota Vitz will be released in Japan on December 22 of this year.
So far Toyota has not stated when the Yaris version will arrive at European and North American markets, but we expected to see it shows up in these markets around the second half of 2011.
The new 2012 Toyota Vitz is designed as subcompact car with fuel efficiency in mind. It is powered by a 1.3-liter gasoline engine, which features a start-stop system to provide a fuel return of 62.3 mpg U.S. and CO2 emissions of about 88g/km. Toyota claims that the Vitz will be the one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment in Japan.
Although still some time away, the new Toyota Yaris does look the business with its modernized and more aggressive design. We can’t help but notice it has taken some design cues from the Toyota Prius as well (such as the headlights).The sporty versions you see pictured here are called Toyota Vitz Modellista which are essentially a Yaris with a body kit.

2010 Toyota Matrix

The 2010 Toyota Matrix  is esstially a tall hatchback  version of Corolla  thesedan; though it's shorter and a bit easier to park, it has an interior that's more easily reconfigured for larger cargo items. Sometimes called the Toyota Corolla Matrix, it comes with all the qualities that make the  Corolla sedan appealing, including an affordable price, good fuel economy, and a reasonably comfortable ride. For 2010, the Matrix jumps up with respect to safety, with electronic stability newly standard on the model line.
With its recent redesign, as an early 2009 model, the Matrix picked up a lower, sportier stance, yet retained similar proportions to the previous version. Overall, it flows a little more, thanks to a more contoured roofline and a number of sculpted details. The seating position is a little lower, and interior styling has been given more matte-metallic trim, though the overall effect is simple and unmistakably.

What's New for 2010

After a redesign last year, the 2010 Toyota Matrix is unchanged except for the notable addition of standard stability control.

Unfortunately, the economical 1.8-liter engine is only available on the base model. If you want the additional feature content of the S or XRS model, a larger 2.4-liter engine is mandatory. The 2.4 engine adds some punch, but fuel economy drops to 24 mpg combined. All-wheel drive is optional on the S model, dropping fuel economy to 22 mpg. Notably, both the S AWD and XRS models feature a more advanced independent double-wishbone rear suspension in place of the standard torsion-beam setup, moderately improving the Matrix's handling behavior.
Of course, the Matrix is no Mazda 3 when the going gets twisty. But that hasn't kept myriad Matrix owners from driving home with smiles on their faces, and we expect this trend to continue. There's a reason Europeans love hatchbacks and wagons: They drive like cars and haul like SUVs. Americans now have many such models available to them, including the aforementioned Mazda 3 (all-new this year), the all-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza, the impressive Hyundai Elantra Touring, the premium-built Volkswagen Rabbit and even Toyota's own Scion xB. Each of these cars has its own particular set of merits, but for a compact hatchback offering practicality and style in equal measures, the 2010 Toyota Matrix stands tall.

On the base front-wheel-drive Toyota Matrix, you'll find a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a four-speed automatic is optional. Matrix S and XRS models upgrade to a 2.4-liter engine that makes 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, as well as an optional five-speed automatic alongside the standard five-speed manual. The AWD S comes only with the four-speed automatic.
Equipped with the 1.8-liter engine, the Matrix returns above-average fuel economy -- 26 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined with the manual, according to the EPA, while the four-speed auto yields 25/31/28. City mileage takes a dive if you opt for the larger engine: Ratings are 21/28/24 mpg with the manual, 21/29/24 mpg with the automatic and 20/26/22 mpg with AWD.

Safety

In government crash testing, the Matrix scored a perfect five stars for frontal and front-seat side impacts, dropping to four stars for rear-seat side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Matrix its highest rating of "Good" in both frontal-offset and side impact crash testing.

There are 19.8 cubic feet of luggage capacity behind the rear seats and an impressive 61.5 cubes with the seats folded flat (note that this figure also likely takes into account the folded front passenger seat).

If you want a Tesla Roadster, you better sign up now. Tesla Motors plans to stop building the car in 2011.
Buried deep inside the Securities and Exchange Commission paperwork Tesla filed  ahead of its IPO is the announcement that production of the two-seater and its souped up Roadster Sport sibling (pictured) will stop next year, and a replacement won’t hit the road until 2013 at the earliest.
Why? Because it doesn’t have anyone to build it.

“We do not plan to sell our current generation Tesla Roadster after 2011 due to planned tooling changes at a supplier for the Tesla Roadster,” the company wrote in the filing.” The Roadster is built by Lotus, so presumably Tesla is talking about changes at the British automaker’s factory in Hethel, England, but we can’t confirm that because Tesla spokesman Ricardo Reyes declined to comment.
Tesla plans to replace the Roadster, but not “until at least one year after the launch of the which is Model S,not expected to be in production until 2012.” The company just closed a $465 million loan with the Department of Energy to finance construction of the Model S sedan, and it is focusing most of its time and resources on that car.
Stopping production of the Roadster could could present a problem, because it means Tesla won’t have any cars to sell — and no revenue coming in.
“As a result, we anticipate that we may generate limited, if any, revenue from selling electric vehicles after 2011 until the launch of the planned model S,” the company says in the SEC filing. That may not be a problem if S production starts on plan and goes off without a hitch, but if Tesla hits any snags, things could get ugly fast — a point it concedes in the filing.
“The launch of the Model S could be delayed for a number of reasons and any such delays may be significant and would extend the period in which we would generate limited, if any, revenues from sales of our electric vehicles.”
The move amounts to killing the car that made Tesla famous for the sake of the Model S. Tesla better hope everything goes according to plan, or it surely will regret that decision.

2011 Tesla Roadster 2.5: New looks, wheels, seats, less noise



Tesla's on a roll, it seems. Two days after its successful public stock offering, the company has released details of the latest updates to its Roadster electric sports car--known as "Roadster 2.5" after software-release numbering. The 2.5 version sports some new styling at front and rear, including a new front fascia 
After spending an afternoon with the world's first volume produced electric sports car, it strikes me as something of a conundrum. On the one hand, I respect it for the accomplishment it represents, but at the same time the limitations it imposes give me pause.
The afternoon I spent with the Roadster, we covered 143 miles and it had 28 miles of range left when I took it back. Which theoretically means I could've driven it 171 miles in my admittedly uneconomical fashion on the charge it had when its key was handed over to me. Thing is, I could not have driven it to where I did and back like that if I'd s Tesla.
As a sports car, that limitation is something of a buzz-kill for me. However, taken as a commuter, it has the potential to be absolutely wonderful. Even if my job were 60 miles away from my home, it'd still have more than enough range to bring me back--on the same charge. And that's not even considering I'd Lotus Elise certainly have a place to plug it in while at work.
As a commuter car, the Tesla Roadster would be pretty tough to live with though. Based as it is on the  and inheriting that car's notoriously unfriendly ergonomics, contorting myself to get in and out of the Roadster to go to and from work everyday would get old fast. Remarkably, the thing it ought to be good at is fraught with peril while the thing it is good at is fraught with impracticality.
And that's before we even consider the price.
As tested, the Roadster I drove carried a $150,000+ sticker. For that kind of money there are more than a few truly amazing  sports cars you can drive wherever you like without the need to limber up before trying to get into them. Also, while the Tesla is low and sleek, when the road gets twisty it isn't exactly as swoopy as those other cars either.
You can dance with the Roadster when the music's hot, but you have to be very capable of managing understeer. The first time I tried to turn the Tesla aggressively into a corner, all that weight in its hind parts, coupled with the unexpected heaviness of its steering found me running considerably wide of the apex I'd aimed for.
Despite its diminutive size, and familial relationship to the go kart-like Lotus, the Tesla prefers to be set up for a corner as if it is considerably larger than it actually is and finessed through. Do that, you can run quite quickly, but it's conundrum time again. Here's a small sports car that wants to be driven like a larger GT car.
The Roadster is quite stable at triple digit speeds and its combination of regenerative and friction brakes are more than up to the task--absolutely fade-free and genuinely confidence-inspiring. I also like the way the strong regenerative braking helps slow the car, as downshifting would do, when entering a turn. This has the added advantage of generating more juice too.

The interior of the car is lovely, with exceptional quality in evidence throughout. The backlit pushbuttons for the single speed transmission's functions are slick and the iPod dock at the edge of the center stack is pure genius.
Again, for the accomplishment it represents, the Tesla Roadster deserves our unfettered adulation--rousing applause even. It has attracted considerable interest to electric cars, and some say it even embarrassed GM into creating the Volt. The viability of the Roadster's powertrain attracted partnerships from established players like Panasonic, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. As a marketing device for the Tesla Company it is an absolute success. Taken on its own as a sports car though--in this writer's opinion--the Tesla Roadster leaves some things to be desired.

The Basics:

Tesla has delivered on its promise: The 2011 Tesla Roadster 2.5 is truly the first green alternative to more than 100 years of fast cars powered by gasoline. The Roadster's classic two-seat shape, complete with soft top, provides what can only be called kick-ass performance without a tailpipe, emissions, or a fuel tank.
The 2011 Roadster has been updated to "Version 2.5," in Tesla's Silicon Valley argot. This third model year for the low-production Roadster includes a restyled front end, more comfortable seats, better noise insulation, and an optional backup camera. Otherwise, it's the same all-electric Roadster whose performance has earned raves from reviewers all over the globe.
Based on a heavily revised platform borrowed from  Lotus Elise, the Tesla Roadster was first unveiled in 2006. Volume deliveries began early in 2009 at a price of $109,000 for the standard Roadster, and $128,500 for the even quicker Roadster Sport.
The Tesla Roadster will always be a low-volume vehicle. Tesla is moving closer to introduction of its Model S all-electric mid-size sports sedan, now planned to occur before the end of 2012. But Roadster production winds down in December 2011, once an assembly contract with England's  Lotus ends with a total of 2,400 cars built.
As a proof of concept to show what a modern electric can offer, the Tesla Roadster will go down in automotive history whether or not Tesla Motors survives as an independent company. The Roadster did more to update the image of the electric car than any other single vehicle. And it did it using the best of all possible arguments: It's truly, impressively, addictively fun to drive.
The 2011 Roadster is a 2-door, 2-passenger convertible sports car, available in two trims, the Convertible and the Sport.

Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard MOTOR, 288-horsepower, electric engine. A 1-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The changes come, Tesla says, as the result of its “close feedback loop” with its customers. “These improvements are a direct result of customer feedback,” says CEO Elon Musk. In other words, they’re fixing things that buyers have probably complained about.
Other updates include new “directional” forged wheels, offered in black or silver;
Inside, the most significant alteration is undoubtedly more comfortable seats, which have larger bolsters and now include a lumbar support system. Interior noise has been reduced in several ways, including new sound-suppressing front fender liners.
There’s now an optional backup camera in a 7-inch touchscreen display as well.
Finally, Tesla has further modified the Roadster’s power-control system, adding unspecified hardware to permit “spirited driving” (which we presume means maximum electric power) in exceptionally hot climates.
The company is now taking orders for the 2011 Tesla Roadster 2.5, and it will appear shortly in Tesla's network of stores in the U.S. and overseas. “Where feasible,” according to Musk, “we will also offer existing customers the ability to purchase the upgrades.”
Its two newest Tesla Stores–in Newport Beach, California, and Copenhagen, Denmark–will open with evening receptions. Both will have the Roadster 2.5 on display.
Tesla has now sold more than 1,200 Roadsters to buyers in 23 countries. It claims the cars have logged a total of more than 5 million miles. Questions remain, however, over even after  whether the company can remain independent its IPO.

The next generation Yaris is due in 2012 but given that it’s sold in other markets as a Toyota Vitz, pictures of the new model have emerged from a brochure printed in Asia.
 The new Toyota “Vitz” is likely to be a good indication as to what the new Yaris will look like. We imagine it will get minor cosmetic changes before it comes to Australia but nonetheless, this is most likely the new Yaris.

Thus, the driver gains in instrument legibility, but on the other hand, loses the practical double glove box of the previous Yaris.
We don’t have any official information about the available powerplants, though we expect the initial line-up to consist of a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre and a 4-cylinder 1.3-litre. In 2012, we’ll also see a hybrid version, which will use the now familiar Hybrid Synergy Drive, probably combined with a 1.3- or 1.5-litre engine to combat the likes of Honda’s Jazz Hybrid.
